Throwback Thursday – Parade Stories

Friends of the Montauk Library parade float, 1980 | Al Holden Collection, Montauk Library Archives

It’s that time of year when we write a post about the Montauk St. Patrick’s Day Parade, sharing some aspect of its founding or the history of its organizers–the Montauk Friends of Erin.

Last year we posted a cartoon by Frank Borth depicting a colorful parade of marchers, floats, and balloons rounding the plaza. The bleachers are empty, except for one lone reluctant reviewer.

In 2023, we wrote about Montauk’s first St. Patrick’s Day “parade” in 1947, years before the Montauk Friends of Erin was founded.

The year before, we celebrated Women’s History Month and honored the parade’s female Grand Marshals.

In 2021, the second year the parade was canceled because of COVID, we reminisced about past parades with Herb Herbert, the 1992 Grand Marshal.

This year, we invite you to contribute your stories from the Montauk St. Patrick’s Day Parade.

Do you have an unforgettable memory from a past parade? Were you honored as a Grand Marshal? Did you help build a float or march with a local group? Are you one of the kids riding a bicycle in the picture below?

Share your stories in the comments or email them to archives@montauklibrary.org and we’ll post them on our blog.

The Friends used to do a float every year. It was always book-themed and the last one I remember being discussed was Harry Potter, so that will give you an idea of when it stopped. We won an award many years.
